Top 10 Styling Tips for Jewelry
1. Jewelry should complement, never compete. Jewelry Savvy authors Caroline Stanley and Cynthia Sliwa suggest using the "blink test". Close your eyes for a few moments, and then open them. If the first thing you notice about your outfit is the jewelry, it may be overpowering the woman wearing it.
2. When clothing is embellished with ruffles, bows, or feathers, or includes details such as fur, busy prints or brocades, tone down the jewelry. Go simple and bold with a strand of Tahitian or South Sea pearls or a stunning cocktail ring.
3. Observe seasonal trends in the hardware used on clothes, shoes and handbags, such as zippers, studs, buckles, and buttons. If there is a lot of hardware, tone the jewelry down. Stylists agree that it's okay to mix metals, but there must be an element to tie the look together.
4. Jewelry should have the same relative weight as the fabric in the outfit. Light, airy, chiffon-like fabric looks best with delicate, airy jewelry. Stiff or heavy fabric looks best with big, bold jewelry.
5. Big cocktail rings look best when worn as the only ring on the hand; smaller rings can be worn in multiples.
6. What to do about prints? Options include going neutral with diamonds, pearls or plain metal. Another option is to choose a colored gemstone piece to play up on the garments colors.
7. Understand this season's prevailing color palette and what jewelry looks best with it. A warm color have a yellow-based undertone and typically looks better with jewelry featuring yellow gold and stones such as: citrine, topaz, garnet, smoky quartz, yellow diamond or sapphire, peridot, or chocolate pearls.
8. Cool Colors have a blue based undertone and look good with white metals and stone such as: aquamarine, blue sapphire, pink sapphire, amethyst, tanzanite, blue topaz, gray pearls, blue diamonds, and green amethyst.
9. Neutral colors work with either warm or cool tones. Choose diamonds, white or pink pearls, black pearls, black diamonds, Champagne diamonds, pink tourmaline, emerald, opal, ruby, and rhodolite garnet.
10. Have fun with your Jewelry! Everyone has their own personal style.
